Employees of a Samsung Electronics factory in Sao Paulo, Brazil were recently held hostage during a Hollywood-style robbery. This past Sunday, July 6, approximately twenty armed men entered the facility and used as many as ten trucks to get away with over 40,000 Samsung products. The value of said products is estimated at around $6.3 million.
Samsung Eletronica da Amazonia Ltda., Samsung’s Brazilian based operation, declared in a statement, as reported by Yahoo! Tech, “We have cooperated fully with the police investigation that is underway and will do our best to avoid any sort of repeat incident.”
A spokesman for the state’s public security secretariat said the police have not identified any of the thieves at this time. The heist was carried out over a four-hour period while holding fifty of the company’s employees at gunpoint.
Seven thieves apparently commandeered a shuttle ferrying ten employees to the factory, setting all but two employees free. Once at the factory, the bandits overpowered the security guards and proceeded to round up the rest of the factory’s employees before allowing the other thirteen thieves to enter with the getaway trucks. Video surveillance allegedly taken from the ransacked factory showed men wearing black clothing and headgear as they loaded electronics into their trucks.
The Korean electronic maker has already announced that insurance will cover most of the losses from the theft. According to Proactive Investors, Samsung’s stock rose 0.2 percent to 1,295,000 won in Seoul trading. Though the multi-million dollar theft was an unfortunate incident, Samsung officials explained that they were just relieved that no one was hurt.
