Reportedly, Jason Momoa, 34, has been cast as Aquaman in the upcoming “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” film. The rumors that Momoa would take on this role have been prevalent for months, first emerging at the end of last year. Until this point, Momoa has denied any participation in this film.
Rumors have still not been officially confirmed by Warner Brothers, however Drew McWeeny at Hitfix released information that director Zack Snyder has already finalized the details of the character’s design. This epic hero collaboration is due for release in 2016.
Many have speculated how “Dawn of Justice” will set the stage for the following, long-anticipated “Justice League” film. It is likely that Aquaman will be introduced in “Dawn of Justice” to launch his participation in the “Justice League” flick.
In his statement, McWeeny said, “Someone else who’s not particularly happy about what happened in that film is Aquaman. I’m not sure if that’s the actual name they’ll use or not, but what we’re hearing is that he is not pleased about the World Engine and what it did to the Indian Ocean. He will not have a major role in the film, but he will make an appearance, and it definitely sets him up to return once Snyder gets to ‘Justice League.’”
Many know the Honolulu hunk from HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” In the megahit series, Momoa played both Conan the Barbarian and Khal Drogo. Most recently, Momoa starred in the Sundance Channel series “The Red Road”. Momoa is represented by APA and KLWGN.
It seems that Warner Brothers wants Aquaman to be a complex character who is taken seriously, regardless of who plays him. This may not come naturally to audiences because, in general, Aquaman has only made appearances in various comics and animations. The last time Aquaman was portrayed by a human was in 2006 in a CW network pilot, nevertheless the show was never even picked up.
Certainly, Momoa would not portray Aquaman like Vinny Chase. He would bring a grittier, more masculine touch to the role and no one’s complaining.
