Marvel impresses once again (for the 20th straight time)

Ant-Man and the Wasp, the sequel to Marvel’s Ant-Man, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly raked in just $76 million in its North America box office debut.

The movie features two ordinary people who can alter their size, becoming miniature or gigantic with a push of a button, in order to defeat criminals. Ant-Man is one of many superheroes in the Marvel universe, which connects most superheroes in one way or another. Through all of these movies, Disney’s Marvel Studios has generated $17 billion over the years, which is more than the entire Star Wars and Harry Potter individual series.

BoxOffice.com analyst Shawn Robbins explains that the reason for Marvel’s success is its emphasis on minor characters – not just the most popular ones like Spider-Man or Captain America. By putting more emphasis on Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Deadpool, and others, Marvel is able to squeeze out as much revenue as possible from its superheroes as possible. In essence, Marvel is successfully doing what Star Wars couldn’t with “Han Solo.”

And if Disney can acquire 21st Century Fox, which it is on pace to do, then it will be able to bring superheroes like the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the universe as well.

Most impressively, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” gives Marvel its 20th straight number one box office opening – an incredible feat that seems almost impossible at first glance. Marvel continues to thrive, even with its less popular films like Ant-Man and the Wasp, and it will likely do so for years to come.
