It’s hard to believe that Ray Allen (UCONN) hit the game-winning shot over Allen Iverson (Georgetown) in the Big East Championship 19 years ago, but it’s true. According to the Boston Globe, Allen is leaning toward signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Allen, 39, averaged 26.5 minutes per game for the Miami Heat last year.
Experts feel that with Cleveland’s stacked roster, much less play time will be required of him. Dion Waiters and Andrew Wiggins are widely expected to handle the bulk of shooting guard responsibilities next year.
Lebron James made quick work of having former teammates Mike Miller and James Jones signed, which added two three-point threats to the Cavs’ roster. Allen would be the third, and he has been by far the most productive of the three. In a statistically sub-par year for Allen, he averaged 9.6 and 9.3 points per game in the regular and post-season respectively for the Heat last year.
Those are paltry numbers until you peek at Miller’s and Jones’s stats. Miller averaged 20.8 minutes and 7.1 points per game in the regular season. Jones played 11.8 minutes per game and averaged 4.9 points per game in the regular season. Allen won an NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and the Miami Heat in 2013. He is a ten-time All-Star and was an Olympic gold medalist on the USA basketball team in 2000.
