The human World Cup may be over, but the world cup for robots just began. The RoboCup, an international competition in which autonomous robots play soccer, kicked off Monday, July 21, in Brazil.
According to the RoboCup, the tournament lasts for six days and features teams of remote-free robots from over 40 countries, all competing for a soccer championship. The robotic game follows the same rules as the World Cup, such as scoring, fouls and side kicks. A human judge, assisted by a robot judge, observes the games.
The game will be played in “Poeta Ronaldo Cunha Lima,” the new Convention Center in Brazil. In addition to the match, exhibition booths and free public attractions will be available to promote and encourage scientific production.
The RoboCup is a project founded in 1997 that aims to develop a robot soccer team that can beat the human team champion of the FIFA World Cup by 2050.
