If there was any question as to the United States support of Israel, there is no longer. A U.S. Congress that has been unable to agree on very little, has just approved a measure that will double the funds given to Israel’s Iron Dome defense. It is a move seen as absolutely necessary, as people around the world have protested against Israel in favor of the Palestinians.

According to The Associated Press, the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee approved a bill that will provide Israel with $621.6 million for missile defense, with $351 million going specifically towards the Iron Dome. Deemed a tremendous success, the Iron Dome has been Israel’s best defense system against identifying and intercepting Hamas rocket fire.

Senator Dick Durbin, chairman of the subcommittee, said, as reported by the Associated Press, “It works.” Durbin went on to elaborate that the bill would also provide about $25 million to used to develop a new domestic rocket engine. A move aimed at eliminating dependence on Russian-built rocket engines.

The bill, which is scheduled to release $549.3 million of the appropriated funds on October 1, is expected to save several weapons programs that the Pentagon had considered scaling back or eliminating completely. The programs saved include the A-10 Warthog and the USS George Washington aircraft carrier.
