Walmart Produces 10,000 Jobs Due to Trump Pressure?

The pressure from President-elect Donald Trump isn’t just resting on the shoulders of auto companies. Even retailers like Walmart are feeling it. This Tuesday Walmart announced the creation of nearly 10,000 jobs in the U.S.

However, these 10,000 jobs it plans to create this year is just a small number compared to the 1.4 million employees the company has all over the United States. Trump will take office tomorrow but has been using Twitter to criticize companies that seem to be straying outside the U.S. with their business.

Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos received many harsh words from the President-elect last year. Just recently, however, Amazon announced it is bringing 100,000 new jobs to the U.S. as well.

Walmart’s new jobs are part of existing plans of company expansion as well as new store openings. The building of new stores all over the country brings an estimated 24,000 construction jobs.

Walmart also imports many of the good that it sells to consumers in the U.S. Trump talked quite a lot about creating taxes on imported goods. For years, however, the company attempted to increase the amount of American-made goods it sells in the U.S.

For example, back in 2013 Walmart announced that over the next ten years the company would purchase $250 billion in American-made products. Walmart brings in an estimated $300 billion annually. It’s also predicted that the company dished out $2.7 billion in raises and training for its employees.

Although it says its adding jobs, Walmart had to cut jobs just last year. The closure of nearly 154 of its express stores cost about 10,000 jobs. Walmart also eliminated jobs at headquarters. Around 7,000 office positions were also cut. Walmart says that changes made were in benefit of bringing more focus to in-store workers.

After a Tweet from Trump, companies like Ford retracted its decision to move plants to Mexico. Fiat Chrysler also announced it was bringing more jobs to Michigan. Despite these changes, the companies say their choices had nothing to do with the President-elect.
