Heard of Tinder? Well, now it’s time to meet Yeti, the Tinder of finding new places and meeting people with similar interests. Developed by the makers of At The Pool, this new app copies Tinder’s app layout, but it replaces selfies with locations and interests. Users even interact with the app in a similar fashion, swiping left on the photo to pass or swiping right on the app to join in on the discussion.
Alex Capecelatro, a co-founder of the app, told TechCrunch the app has become incredibly popular with travelers. It’s true, there are a slew of travel advice sites such as Tripadvisor and Yelp already available, but this app introduces users to off-the-beaten-path attractions that they might never stumble upon otherwise. The app generates live discussions between users that allow real experiences to be shared in real time.
The app isn’t just a hit with travelers. It’s a great program for getting to know your hometown as well. Who would have known there was a quaint little Italian restaurant specializing in Eggplant parmigiana just around the corner from your house? Without this app, users reason, you might have never known.
However, Yeti is not just about finding new places. It’s also about meeting new people. The app allows users to meet people with similar interests, creating new friendship and relationships in the process.
Capecelatro explained that his goal for the app is to use technology to connect people with one another. Technology can have a tendency to drive people further apart as smartphones can sometimes be easier to deal with than people. Capecelatro wants to close that gap.
The app has currently received a little under one million dollars in funding. Investors include Clearstone Venture Partners, Canyon Creek Capital, David Carter of Amplify and Dennis Phelps of IVP. Even Tinder CEO Sean Rad gave his support, suggesting the app follow Tinder’s swipe-right-swipe-left style of navigation. The app is currently available for free on the iTunes store.
