What Is the Metaverse, and How Does It Work?
FILE – In this Oct. 12, 2021 file photo, Hadrien Gurnel, software engineer EPFL’s Laboratory for Experimental Museology (eM+) explores with a virtual reality helmet the most detailed 3D map of the universe with the virtual reality software VIRUP, Virtual Reality Universe Project developed by Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in St-Sulpice near Lausanne, Switzerland. The term metaverse seems to be everywhere. Facebook is hiring thousands of engineers in Europe to work on it, while video game companies are outlining their long-term visions for what some consider the next big thing on the internet. Essentially, it’s a world of endless, interconnected virtual communities where people can meet, work and play. You can go to a virtual concert, take a trip online and try on digital clothing. But tech companies still have to figure out how to connect their online platforms.(Laurent Gillieron/Keystone via AP)

Meta may be prioritizing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses over VR and Oculus. It makes sense—VR is out, AI is in, and Meta’s smart glasses are AI’s best device. However, The Information revealed that Apple is prioritizing a cheaper Vision headset over a Vision Pro replacement the same week Alex Heath reported this Command Line shake-up. This seems to be affecting our most unique VR and AR future visions.

After David leaves for a show, Alex Heath joins Nilay and me to discuss AR and VR in Silicon Valley. Our conversation goes beyond that. There’s also a nice new universal remote with a huge screen and a restricted audience, Framework’s new laptop with a strange CPU, and Qualcomm’s new laptop processors are now accessible to reviewers and the public. We analyze the industry implications as our team feverishly benchmarks them.

After those huge debates, we, like huge Tech, speak about AI since there was significant news there this week! Former OpenAI head scientist Ilya Sutskever, a prominent participant in last November’s attempted coup, has a new AI startup. He may not have a business strategy, but he has enormous AI ideas. Perplexity looks to be destroying bridges to establish a competitive AI search engine, escalating conflict between creators and AI businesses who want them as clients and training data.
