On Monday, the University of Tokyo announced that Alibaba Group (9988. HK) founder Jack Ma will be a visiting professor at Tokyo College, a new entity.

The institution claimed China’s most famous entrepreneur’s position expires in October but is renewed annually.

Ma will advise on research topics and teach management and business start-ups at the college.

Following a year-long absence, Ma returned to China in March and made the announcement, which was taken as a reflection of the depressed state of private businesses in China following a harsh two-year regulatory crackdown.

To facilitate communication between the University of Tokyo and its international counterparts, the Tokyo College was established in 2019.
