Elon Musk Backs Gina Carano in Lawsuit Against Disney
Actress Gina Carano has taken legal action against Disney and Lucasfilm, seeking $75,000 in damages and requesting the court to compel Lucasfilm to recast her following her termination in 2021. Elon Musk is financing the lawsuit and has urged others to join. Carano was fired over a social media post in which she drew parallels between being a Republican and being a Jew during the Holocaust.
Known for her role as Cara Dune in the first two seasons of Disney+’s “The Mandalorian,” Carano frequently engaged in online disputes with left-wing individuals. The lawsuit alleges wrongful termination and retaliation, contending that she was treated differently from two male co-stars who faced no consequences for posts that denigrated Republicans as Nazis. Carano claims she was terminated for expressing her opinions and resisting online criticism. The legal action filed in a California federal court is a 59-page civil suit that details allegations in a narrative filled with Star Wars references.
The complaint begins with referencing a “galaxy not so far away,” where the defendants clarified that only one orthodoxy in thought, speech, or action was acceptable, and those who questioned or failed to comply would not be tolerated. The actress asserts that she was subjected to a “bullying smear campaign” aimed at silencing and destroying her.
In a statement on X, Carano thanked Elon Musk and her supporters, emphasizing that artists do not surrender their rights as American citizens when entering employment. Musk, who shared her statement, pledged financial support for those facing discrimination for their X posts.
A spokesperson for Musk’s company expressed pride in backing Carano’s lawsuit as part of their commitment to free speech. The legal action marks another instance where a public figure seeks redress for termination over social media posts.
Carano’s case highlights the contentious intersection of personal expression, political views, and employment in the age of social media. It remains to be seen how the lawsuit will unfold and whether it will set any precedents in navigating the delicate balance between freedom of speech and corporate consequences for public figures.
