Michael Ball to Take Over Steve Wright’s Love Songs Show

Following the tragic death of Steve Wright, the iconic host of Radio 2’s Love Songs, the BBC has confirmed that Michael Ball will be taking over as the new host starting in June. Ball expressed his excitement and nervousness about stepping into Wright’s shoes but promised to continue his extraordinary legacy.Wright had been hosting the show since 1996 and was beloved by listeners for his friendly presence, personal stories, and selection of classic love songs. His final episode aired on 11 February, 2024, just a week before his unexpected passing.

Tributes poured in for Wright, with fellow DJs remembering him as a radio genius who deeply cared about his craft. Liza Tarbuck presented a special edition of Love Songs dedicated to Wright, where listeners shared their heartfelt memories and messages.

Michael Ball, who has been a presenter on BBC Radio 2 since 2005, expressed his intention to continue the show’s tradition of sharing beautiful and uplifting music while also incorporating stories and requests from the listeners. The program will be renamed Love Songs with Michael Ball, and Ball emphasized that it will be a collaborative effort with the audience.

Additionally, comedian and actor Paddy McGuinness will take over Ball’s current Sunday lunchtime slot, while a new presenter for Wright’s other show, Pick Of The Pops, will be announced later.

Meanwhile, broadcaster Mark Radcliffe announced an extended leave of absence from his shows on Radio 2 and 6 Music, unrelated to his previous battle with cancer. Radcliffe assured fans that he is feeling great and simply wants to take some time off to pursue other interests. During his absence, Stuart Maconie will host the Radcliffe and Maconie show on 6 Music solo, and Shaun Keaveny will host Radio 2’s Folk show.
