Netflix has officially announced a sequel to the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which has become the streaming platform’s most-watched movie of all time. While a release date has not yet been confirmed, the sequel will be the first project under a new multi-year exclusive deal between Netflix and the film’s co-directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
The original film follows three members of the fictional K-pop group Huntr/x—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who balance the pressures of global pop stardom with their secret lives as demon hunters. The mix of music, action, and Korean cultural elements helped the movie become a global phenomenon.
The announcement comes as the film continues to gain major awards attention. It is nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, while the track Golden has already won a Grammy Awards trophy for Best Song Written for Visual Media—the first time a K-pop song has won in that category.
Singer Kim Eun‑jae, known professionally as Ejae, performs the singing voice of the main character Rumi and co-wrote several songs from the film. She has hinted that the sequel could explore new musical styles from Korea, reflecting the diversity of the country’s music scene.
Producer Zhun, who worked on the hit track “Golden,” also expressed excitement about building on the high-energy blend of music and animation that defined the first film.
Since its release, KPop Demon Hunters has become a major cultural success. The movie accumulated over 480 million views in its first six months, according to Netflix. The song “Golden” also topped the Billboard Hot 100, helping the film break into mainstream Western markets while celebrating Korean pop culture.
The original movie reportedly took seven years to develop, from its first pitch to release. With the sequel now confirmed, the filmmakers say there is still much more story to explore in the world of Huntr/x—suggesting the franchise may only be getting started.
