Amazon has taken a monumental step forward in the realm of smart assistants with the launch of Alexa Plus, a next-generation, generative-AI-powered version of its widely popular Alexa voice assistant. Announced on March 21, 2025, this groundbreaking update is poised to redefine how we interact with our smart devices. Jennifer Pattison Tuohy, a seasoned smart home reporter with over a decade of experience testing connected gadgets, shared the details of this exciting development, which is set to roll out in an early access preview in the coming weeks.

Alexa Plus is not merely an upgrade; it’s a complete reimagining of the Alexa experience. Powered by generative AI, this new version is designed to understand natural language, remember user preferences, and even detect emotions in your voice. Picture this: you say, “Alexa, I’m cold, and it’s too dark in here,” and your assistant adjusts the thermostat and lights without requiring repeated commands. It’s a smarter, more intuitive way to interact with your smart home.

The early access phase is limited to U.S. users who own newer Echo Show devices, specifically the Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 smart displays. Once granted access, Alexa Plus will work across all compatible Echo devices, Fire TV devices, Fire tablets, the Alexa app, and the web at Alexa.com. However, older Echo devices, such as the first-gen Echo Dot, Echo, and Echo Show, won’t support Alexa Plus. Third-party devices like Sonos speakers and the Ecobee smart thermostat are also excluded for now, though Amazon has hinted at future support.

During the early access period, Alexa Plus will be free to use. However, Amazon plans to introduce a $19.99 monthly subscription fee or include it as part of an Amazon Prime membership once the preview phase ends. To sign up, users can visit Amazon’s Alexa Plus landing page and will receive notifications via email and their Echo devices once access is granted.

One of the standout features of Alexa Plus is its ability to handle multi-command processing. For example, you can ask Alexa to turn on the lights, adjust the thermostat, play your favorite playlist, and check your schedule—all in a single request. The assistant can also perform advanced tasks like ordering groceries, booking restaurant reservations, and adding multiple calendar events by simply uploading a photo of your schedule.

While Alexa Plus is the future, Amazon isn’t abandoning the original Alexa. Users can continue using the older version on unsupported devices or opt out of Alexa Plus on newer ones. However, Amazon’s focus will be on developing Alexa Plus, which means the original Alexa will receive updates but no major new features.

The transition to Alexa Plus has raised some concerns among developers. With over 160,000 skills available on the original Alexa, not all will be supported on Alexa Plus at launch. Developers can request their skills be ported over or create new ones using Amazon’s three new AI-native SDKs. However, there’s uncertainty about monetization, as Amazon is shifting focus to agentic capabilities that may bypass third-party skills.

Panos Panay, Head of Devices and Services at Amazon, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation, stating, “We will keep the original Alexa updated, but our focus is on the new version.” Lauren Raemhild, an Amazon spokesperson, reassured users, saying, “If you find that a skill you used is missing, you can let Amazon know, and it will work to enable them on Alexa Plus.”

Alexa Plus represents a significant step forward in smart home technology, offering a more natural and intuitive way to interact with our devices. However, the limited device compatibility and subscription model may leave some users feeling left out. As Amazon continues to refine Alexa Plus, it will be interesting to see how developers and users adapt to this new era of AI-powered assistants.
