Chegg Inc. (CHGG.N) is bringing ChatGPT, the prohibited homework-drafting chatbot, to more pupils.
Last week, CEO Dan Rosensweig told Reuters that the U.S. educational software manufacturer had created CheggMate, a student-focused study tool, by combining its quiz responses with the chatbot’s GPT-4 AI engine.
“It’s a tutor in your pocket,” he stated before Monday’s CheggMate announcement.
Rosensweig claimed the software would personalize practice exams and guide study by analyzing data on students’ classes and exam questions missed, unlike generalist tools like ChatGPT. Chegg claimed it would be free next month.
As schools grapple with AI’s effects, the release will expand students’ AI use. For example, last year’s ChatGPT launch allowed students to submit logical chatbot-written projects, allowing some to avoid coursework and forcing teachers to verify them.
According to Reuters, the Los Angeles Unified School District has restricted ChatGPT on its devices and networks pending further study. At the same time, Sciences Po in France banned it due to concerns about plagiarism. However, other teachers recommend ChatGPT for critique if disclosed.
Rosensweig said Chegg concentrates on math and science, not school-challenging essay writing. Teachers can also limit review to recent exam questions.
AI models that predict the next words without facts are inaccurate. Rosensweig claimed Chegg had structured and reviewed its answers for correctness.
He stated Chegg already balances humans and technology. He predicted CheggMate would lower content costs and increase profitability.
In recent months, analysts have questioned whether Chegg can grow its 8 million users as students choose OpenAI’s mostly free ChatGPT software. As of Friday, Chegg’s market cap was $2.3 billion.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in a Monday press statement that the business eagerly teamed with Chegg to “improve the way people around the world learn.”
Rosensweig claimed Chegg’s private data indicated relevance. “That’s why they’re working with us,” he remarked.
