In an interview published Tuesday, Italy’s data protection watchdog chief Pasquale Stanzione said the ChatGPT chatbot could return at the end of April if OpenAI takes “useful steps” to resolve the agency’s concerns.
Microsoft Corp.-backed OpenAI took ChatGPT down in Italy in late March after the watchdog temporarily prohibited its data processing and initiated a probe into a suspected privacy violation.
If OpenAI takes useful measures, we’ll reopen ChatGPT on April 30. “I think the company has, let’s see,” Stanzione told Corriere della Sera.
Last week, Stanzione’s data protection office gave OpenAI a list of demands to rectify its issues by April 30.
Italy was the first Western European country to regulate ChatGPT; its rapid growth has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers and authorities in numerous countries.
