The Yomiuri Daily newspaper stated without attribution that Japan and the U.S. might make a joint declaration on semiconductor and advanced technology cooperation on Friday.

Yomiuri stated that Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura anU.S.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo would agree on the joint statement in Detroit, where Nishimura is attending the 2023 APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting.
At a time when Asia’s largest economy is becoming more assertive, thU.S.US is rallying friends to help it confront China in technology growth.

Washington has restricted chipmaking technology exports to China, while Beijing has banned major infrastructure operators from utilizing Micron Technology Inc. (MU.O) goods.

The Group of Seven advanced democracies, including thU.S.S. and Japan, condemned China’s “economic coercion” last week and pledged to restrict exposure to the world’s second-largest economy.

The Yomiuri stated that a new Japan-U.S. declaration might include a roadmap for next-generation semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies.

Before meeting her Japanese colleague, Raimondo met with Wang Wentao in Washington on Thursday to discuss trade, investment, and export policy.
