Kate Bush Grateful for the Privilege of Serving as Record
Renowned pop star Kate Bush has been announced as an ambassador for Record Store Day 2024, which is scheduled for April 20. The event aims to celebrate independent record shops and vinyl collectors across the UK, showcasing the resurgence in the popularity of vinyl.
Expressing her support for the initiative, Bush described it as a “great privilege” and acknowledged the surprise in the music industry caused by vinyl’s comeback. She stated, “Isn’t it great to see how the resurgence in vinyl has taken the music industry by surprise? It had decided to leave vinyl far behind, but it would seem that not everyone agrees! I love that!”
This year’s Record Store Day will feature the release of numerous limited edition albums and singles by artists such as David Bowie, The 1975, Olivia Rodrigo, Notorious BIG, The Beatles, De La Soul, and Gorillaz.
As an ambassador, Kate Bush will promote the event, including in-store performances and special activities. Additionally, she will release a special 10-inch vinyl of “Eat The Music” from her 1993 album “Red Shoes.” The Record Store Day release features the original artwork printed directly onto the disc.
Reflecting on the enduring appeal of vinyl records, Bush highlighted the unique connection and personal experience that vinyl offers. She mentioned the significance of vinyl encouraging people to listen to albums, emphasizing its role as a beautiful art form with large-scale artwork and a personal connection with the artist.
While Kate Bush has not released new music since 2011, her track “Running Up That Hill” experienced a resurgence in popularity, reaching number one in the UK charts after going viral on TikTok and being featured in the hit sci-fi show “Stranger Things.”
Record Store Day 2024 arrives as vinyl sales in the UK hit a 33-year high in 2023, with sales increasing for the 16th consecutive year. The best-selling LPs included Taylor Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” and the Rolling Stones’ “Hackney Diamonds.”
BBC 6 Music supports Record Store Day, and a complete list of this year’s exclusives can be found on the campaign’s official website. Kate Bush concluded her message with best wishes for fans to have a fantastic time celebrating the event and enjoying specially released music.
