Nissan confirmed on Friday that COO Ashwani Gupta would not be reappointed to the board next month, casting doubt on his CEO prospects.

After Carlos Ghosn’s arrest and removal, Gupta joined Nissan’s leadership team.
Gupta’s associates persuaded the board to designate him co-CEO in 2020, expecting him to turn the firm around and repair relations with Renault SA (RENA.PA).

Nissan confirmed Gupta’s June 27 board resignation Friday.

A corporate official suggested he may remain COO.
Nissan predicted a 38% profit rise on Thursday due to greater sales.

Renault cut its Nissan investment to 15% from 43% in January to equalize their two-decade partnership.
