OnePlus Cancels Its Foldable Plans for 2025—What This Means for Users
Fans of OnePlus foldable devices hoping for a follow-up to the OnePlus Open will have to wait longer than expected. The company has officially announced that it will not release a new foldable phone in 2025, ending speculation about a potential OnePlus Open 2. This news was initially reported by 9to5Google and later confirmed by an official statement from OnePlus through a community update.
A Shift in Strategy
OnePlus Community Product Manager Vale Gu clarified that this decision does not mean the brand is exiting the foldable market. Instead, the company is taking a “pause” to reassess its approach while its parent company, Oppo, continues developing foldable devices. Gu’s statement suggests that OnePlus will not introduce a new foldable phone until at least 2026.
This move aligns with Oppo’s increasing focus on foldable technology. Oppo has been a significant player in the space, consistently refining its foldable offerings. The company is set to launch the Find N5, an ultra-thin foldable smartphone, in China and select global markets. However, as with earlier models, the Find N5 will not be available in the U.S., limiting choices for American consumers.
The Last OnePlus Foldable—For Now
OnePlus entered the foldable market in 2023 with the OnePlus Open, which was well-received due to its innovative design and 20:9 aspect ratio. The phone set sales records in North America on launch day and even influenced future designs, including Google’s 2024 Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Encouraged by this success, OnePlus later introduced the OnePlus Open Apex Edition in 2024. This special edition featured an eye-catching crimson color and improved specifications but retained much of the original design. Users hoping for a significant leap forward with a second-generation OnePlus foldable, however, will need to wait longer.
What’s Next for OnePlus and Foldables?
Despite stepping back in 2025, OnePlus has not ruled out a return to the foldable market. The decision to let Oppo take the lead suggests that OnePlus might be refining its strategy before re-entering the space. This could mean a focus on improving its core smartphone lineup or expanding into other product categories.
For U.S. customers, this development translates to fewer premium foldable options. With Oppo’s latest foldable devices not officially launching in the U.S., Samsung, Google, and Motorola will remain the primary choices for American consumers interested in foldable smartphones.
As of now, OnePlus has not provided a concrete timeline for its return to the foldable segment. While this “pause” might be disappointing for fans, it does not mark the end of OnePlus’ foldable ambitions. The brand appears to be taking a strategic step back, potentially to return with a more advanced and refined product in the future.
