Quebecor pulls ads from Facebook, Instagram. Following Meta Platforms’ (META.O) decision to block news on Facebook and Instagram in Canada due to a law requiring local news publishers to be paid, telecom and media major Quebecor (QBRb.TO) said it would take its ads from the platforms on Wednesday.

In April 2018, the “Online News Act” (House of Commons bill C-18) required businesses like Meta and Alphabet-owned (GOOGL.O) Google to form commercial partnerships and pay news publishers for their material.

Google and Meta stated they would block Canadian news articles if the legislation passes.

Quebecor, which owns media sites and newspapers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its Facebook and Instagram advertising spending.

Meta did not immediately comment.

Canada’s media industry wants tougher regulation of internet firms to recover financial losses from Facebook and Google’s growth in online advertising.
