On Wednesday, Premier Li Keqiang said China will “constructive” participate in global debt resolution.
China, the world’s largest bilateral creditor, has chastised multilateral lenders for opposing haircuts on loans to low-income states.
Li told International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in a phone call that all creditors must help low-income nations solve their debt difficulties.
This month, China encouraged the Group of 20 to conduct a fair, impartial, and in-depth review of global debt difficulties as calls grow for lenders to aid debt-laden developing countries by taking big losses on their loans.
Ghana and Zambia are heavily indebted to China.
According to government figures, Zambia owed Beijing approximately $6 billion of its $17 billion external debt at the end of 2021, while Ghana owed China $1.7 billion.
