New York’s attorney general asked a state judge to deny Donald Trump’s request to delay her civil fraud case against him, saying the former president would use his 2024 White House candidacy as an excuse.
Attorney General Letitia James claimed her agency sent Trump and other defendants an “enormous quantity” of evidence, including 1.7 million documents and 56 witness interview transcripts, in a Wednesday night court filing.
She said it contradicts their argument for an extra six months to gather evidence to defend themselves sufficiently at trial, currently slated for October 2, and accused them of being sluggish in conducting their witness depositions.
James said the defendants’ record is enough to provide due process and avoid the trial from becoming a game of surprise.
“Donald J. Trump will be running for president in 2024,” she said. “Defendants delayed in 2016 and 2020, citing his campaign. So 2024 is unlikely to be different.”
On Thursday, the defendant’s lawyers did not reply to demands for comment.
Judge Arthur Engoron will review the trial schedule on March 21.
After a three-year investigation, James sued Trump, his three adult children, the Trump Organization, and others in September.
The $250 million complaint alleges a decade-long plan to falsify over 200 asset appraisals and Trump’s net worth to get better bank and insurer conditions.
