Ukrainian military authorities claimed Russian forces achieved some success in Bakhmut, the eastern border city, but their men were still hanging on after months of significant casualties.

The UN nuclear watchdog director said the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia power facility in southern Ukraine was no longer safeguarded due to a military buildup.

Russia’s 13-month invasion of Ukraine has focused on Bakhmut and nearby villages in Donetsk’s eastern industrial sector.

“Enemy forces had a degree of success in their efforts aimed at assaulting the city of Bakhmut,” the Ukrainian General Staff stated in a routine report late Wednesday.

“Our defenders keep the city and resist many enemy strikes.”

Ukraine’s general staff has reported 69 daily Russian strikes on the front line for four weeks, down from 124 on March 1-7. Wednesday saw only 57 assaults.

This week, Reuters correspondents along the front west of Bakhmut and farther north reported a significant decrease in Russian assaults.

Russian authorities claim they continue gaining momentum in Bakhmut’s street-by-street combat.

Reuters could not corroborate combat accounts.
