On Friday, Indonesia’s law minister welcomed an extradition deal with Russia, saying it will improve efforts to combat cross-border crimes, including money laundering and cybercrime.

Indonesia’s law minister Yasonna Laoly and Russia’s justice minister Konstantin Chuychenko signed the deal in Bali.

“This is crucial for combating international crimes like cybercrime, money laundering, narcotics, and corruption,” added Yasonna.

Indonesia has maintained cordial relations with Russia despite the Ukraine conflict since 1950.

Last year, Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited Moscow and Kyiv to restart peace negotiations and release grain to global markets.

Official tourist statistics show that Russians are among Indonesia’s most frequent visitors. Some 77,500 Russians landed in Indonesia between September 2022 and January 2023, when COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.
