On Wednesday, Amazon (AMZN.O.) Web Services (AWS) announced that it will provide a sovereign cloud in Europe for use by clients in highly regulated industries and the government.

According to a statement from Amazon’s cloud computing division, the sovereign cloud would use servers housed in the European Union to store data, and only EU citizens working for AWS will be in charge of managing operations and providing assistance.

The European Union has been at the forefront of security and privacy laws, and last year, its privacy watchdog started looking into how the public sector uses cloud-based services and whether or not they adhere to its privacy regulations.

Businesses and governments are increasingly relying on public clouds—the data centers run by major technology companies—instead of building their infrastructure. For government clients in Europe, Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Oracle (ORCL.N) have also introduced their cloud versions.

All European clients will be able to access AWS’s service starting in Germany. Another goal of AWS’s initiative to create a sovereign cloud in Europe is to increase dependability and confidence. AWS hopes to reassure clients that their data will be kept and managed by the highest security requirements by offering a specialized and secure cloud architecture within Europe.

To secure data domestically while encouraging the use of cloud computing, some European countries have launched national cloud initiatives. In line with these national plans, AWS’s European sovereign cloud is well-positioned to advance cooperation with governments to provide safe data storage and management.

A major advancement in cloud computing and data security in the European region has been made with Amazon Web Services’ establishment of a European sovereign cloud. It shows a dedication to boosting data sovereignty, privacy, and security while satisfying the particular regulatory and compliance needs of European governments and enterprises. This project is expected to have a significant impact on how cloud services are developed in Europe and beyond as it develops.
