Starlett Jane Fonda, 76, was honored for her dream-worthy career with the 42nd Life Achievement Award by the American Film Institute. The event was held on Thurs., Jun. 5., at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
As Michael Douglas presented her with the award, Fonda declared that she was, “so happy to add another woman’s name to the list.” Fonda was particularly praised for her political activism and dedication to gender equality.
Jeff Daniels, Fonda’s “Newsroom” co-star, sang a song in celebration of Fonda with the refrain “abs, butt, and thighs.” Evidently his jingle was in reference to her iconic exercise videos. Another humorous demonstration came from Wanda Sykes who alluded to Fonda’s 1968 film by wearing a Barbarella costume.
Tomlin praised Fonda as,”an evolutionary agent for our species.” Then adding that, “She is a role model for the American modern woman.”
Upon collecting her achievement award, Fonda advised, “Ask questions, stay curious. It’s much more important to be interested than to be interesting.” After thanking Vera Wang for her stunning, custom, black and white gown, she revealed her regret for not asking more questions throughout her career.
Some celebrity hosts at the ceremony included: Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep, Sally Field, and Cameron Diaz. Diaz stated that Fonda is, “a beautiful example of navigating a career in Hollywood.”
Eva Longoria, Michael Douglas, and Fonda’s brother, Peter Fonda, spoke at the event. The ceremony was filled with renown guests as well, such as Rosario Dawson, Melanie Griffith, and Felicity Huffman.
The private event is scheduled to air on TNT as a special on Jun. 14.
