Window-based all-in-one PC’s have always been less expensive than iMacs, and it seems that this fact won’t change anytime soon. So is the case with the cheaper base version of the new iMac, starting at $1,099. The least highest price reaches $1,299, but there is a difference in performance between the two.
In order to save $200, consumers are forced to accept a computer with only 500GB of internal storage space and a 1.4GHz dual core Intel Core i5. The $1,299 version packs a quad-core 2.7 Ghz Core i5 and twice as much hard drive space. The cheaper iMac uses Intel HD Graphics 5000; the pricier iMac uses Intel’s far superior Iris Pro graphics.
Apple’s price drop must be a ploy to snatch up unknowing customers that will grab the cheapest Apple or PC they see on display. Some say that the new price point is aimed at college students (popherald.com), but what percentage of college students are paying for their own computers?
It’s unclear whether or not chopping $200 off an iMac will create a niche market, but it certainly won’t hurt. With Apple’s lofty prices, a cheaper version is sure to be a welcome sight to some consumers.
