ArtBinder, an app and platform that allows people to view art galleries remotely, raised $3.17 million in Series A funding to expand its business.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the round is led by Index Ventures, a firm that focuses on investing in information technology and life sciences companies. The venture is joined by other individual investors, including Adam Freed, former Etsy CEO, and Maria Baibakova, art collector.
The investment will be used to expand the ArtBinder Viewer iPad app that will let users view artworks and galleries around the world. Neil Rimer, one of the founders of Index Ventures, said he hoped the money will help ArtBinder to build a better tool to help galleries and artists and introduce a new way of selling works of art to more people.
Alexandra Chemla, founder and CEO of ArtBinder, was inspired to build this app when she was working at galleries to compose art binders. She saw people had to carry those heavy and big binders around to show to potential buyers, and it was the same time when Apple introduced its first iPad. Chemla said she had an idea to combine these two things to lessen the burden for gallery staffs.
Tech Crunch reported the app is now used by more than 300 galleries and dealers, such as David Zwirner, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, Hauser & Wirth, and etc.
