Keeping tabs on your tire pressure couldn’t be easier, thanks to Salutica, a Malaysian manufacturer. The device is called Fobo Tire, and it’s a tiny device that replaces the four tiny black valve caps on cars. You simply replace your originals with Fobo tire sensors, and installation is complete. Fobo Tire continuously monitors tire pressure through Bluetooth technology. When a tire is deflated or flat, the information is sent to either a smart phone app or an in-car receiver. Since Bluetooth is a low-energy technology, the makers of the device claim that the batteries will lasts up to two years before they must be replaced.
In a Crave interview, Jonathan Ho Chang Ti, senior manager at Salutica, said,
“The sensors work 24/7. When it detects a flat or deflated tire, it will send out Bluetooth signals continuously alerting the user of flat tire. As long as user is within the typical Bluetooth range of 10-30m (depending on surrounding walls, etc.), the smartphone will pick up the alert signal.”
According to Ti, if a user it out of range, the alert will sound once he approaches the vehicle to avoid a dangerous driving condition. Maintaining proper tire pressure reaps many benefits. It improves fuel economy, extends tire life and makes for an overall safer vehicle. Fobo Tire is an Indiegogo campaign with more than month remaining and has already far exceeded their goal of raising $28,000. The in-car unit and four sensors are available for $90.
