Boeing Cargo Plane Incident Triggers Investigation After Landing Without Front Landing Gear in Istanbul
A FedEx Airlines Boeing 767 cargo plane made an emergency landing at Istanbul Airport on Wednesday without deploying its front landing gear. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
The aircraft, which was flying from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, informed the control tower in Istanbul that its landing gear had failed to open. Despite the malfunction, the pilots managed to touch down with guidance from the tower and kept the plane on the runway. Airport rescue and fire fighting teams were on standby but were not needed as there were no injuries reported.
The aircraft involved is a nearly 10-year-old Boeing 767 freighter, one of the most common cargo planes. Turkish transport ministry teams are conducting examinations at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Video footage of the incident showed sparks and some smoke as the front of the plane scraped along the runway before coming to a halt. However, no fire broke out. The pilots appeared to execute the emergency drill for landing with a retracted nose gear, as per aviation protocols.
The runway where the emergency landing occurred was temporarily closed to air traffic, but other runways at Istanbul airport continued to operate normally. FedEx stated that it is coordinating with investigation authorities and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
Although manufacturers are typically not involved in the operation or maintenance of jets once they enter service, Boeing has faced increased scrutiny following incidents involving its aircraft.
