The Canadian union Unifor announced late Monday that contract talks with Ford Motor (F.N) were ongoing. It recommended members to report for duty until specifically told differently by the union.
At 11:59 EDT on Monday (03:59 GMT on Tuesday), Unifor’s contract with Ford, which covered 5,600 workers at three facilities, ended. However, the union has not yet said whether it would call for a strike.
Following the update on negotiations shared on social media platform X, Unifor postponed a midnight webcast.
Ford needed to do more, according to Unifor National President Lana Payne, who made the statement in a video released on the union’s website hours earlier.
“If there’s a strike, this will be a total strike,” she declared. All 5,600 members of Unifor who work for Ford in Canada will be on picket lines.
Less than a week had passed since the United Auto Workers union in the U.S. had declared a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N), and Stellantis (STLAM.MI), focusing on one of each company’s assembly plants.
If real progress is not made in negotiations with the Detroit Three automakers, the UAW intends to announce additional plants to strike on Friday.
