During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization conference, Moscow and Beijing sought to fight US ‘hegemony’ on the global arena.
On July 4, 2024, the presidents of China and Russia advised friends to oppose foreign interference, citing a shifting global power structure and a multipolar future.
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, to oppose US “hegemony” on the international arena.
Xi urged nations to “resist external interference” while Putin claimed “new centres” of political and economic power are rising.
We should collaborate to reject external influence, support each other, and address one other’s issues. “We must take charge of our nations’ futures, regional peace, and development,” Xi told the gathering.
“It is vital to the world that the SCO be on the right side of history and fairness and justice.”
In a Kremlin-published joint statement, the group recognized “tectonic shifts in global politics” and urged for the union to increase global and regional security.
“The use of force is increasing, international law is systemically violated, geopolitical confrontation and conflicts are growing, and risks to stability in the world and SCO region are multiplying,” it said.
Finally, the communiqué urged for a “early, complete and sustainable ceasefire” in Gaza and a “comprehensive and just settlement of the Palestinian question”.
