China’s envoy to Ukraine advocated peace talks.
According to China’s foreign ministry, Beijing’s special envoy visited Kyiv earlier this week and urged all sides to create circumstances for peace negotiations.
The foreign ministry statement said special envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui met with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the foreign minister, and other state leaders in Kyiv on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss a political settlement to the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
“China is willing to promote the international community to form the greatest common denominator for resolving the Ukrainian crisis, and make its own efforts to stop the fighting, (establish a) ceasefire and restore peace as soon as possible,” stated.
“China has always played a constructive role in alleviating the humanitarian situation in Ukraine in its own way and will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine within its capacity,” it added.
On Wednesday, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said that Ukraine’s foreign minister warned Li that Kyiv would not accept any suggestions to end the war that involved ceding land or freezing the combat.
Former Russian ambassador Li will visit Poland, France, Germany, and Russia over several days. He is the highest-ranking Chinese official to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022.
China’s foreign ministry said Li and Kyiv agreed to maintain mutual respect and continue mutually beneficial cooperation during his visit.
Both administrations agreed that a recent phone call between President Xi Jinping and Zelenskiy had set the course for ties.
