Climate protesters in New York and across the globe send messages to the United Nations. In Midtown Manhattan on Sunday, thousands of demonstrators began “Climate Week” and called President Joe Biden and world leaders to halt fossil fuel use.
Some of the 15,000 expected waved signs reading “End Fossil Fuel Use,” “Fossil Fuels Kill,” and “Declare a Climate Emergency.” Parades, music, and drumming.
One man warned about increasing sea levels as a melting snowman. World leaders were urged to stop using oil and gas, causing global warming.
Sunday’s rallies were part of Climate Group’s week-long international push to stop global warming and promote climate change action. Over 500 protests were planned in 54 countries, including the U.S., Germany, England, South Korea, India, and others.
Protest organizers estimate over a million people worldwide.
“Climate Week NYC is all about getting it done,” organizers said online. Climate Week NYC celebrates climate action, challenges us to do more, and explores ways to enhance ambition by inspiring, amplifying, and scrutinizing those with the capacity to change.”
Many scientists believe greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels are warming the planet and producing more extreme hurricanes, heat waves, floods, wildfires, and droughts.
Reducing CO2 emissions is crucial to combating climate change. The protests occur two months before the U.N. COP28 climate summit, where over 80 nations will seek a global deal to phase out coal, oil, and gas.
Reuters stated that a recent U.N. assessment cautioned that the world was on a dangerous path toward severe global warming and called for stronger action on all fronts, including a significant decline in coal-fueled power use by 2030.
