Craig Phillips’ Jaguar Hit by Brake Failure Shock
Former Big Brother winner Craig Phillips has shared his harrowing experience of the brakes failing on his Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicle, marking the second such incident for this particular model. The reality TV star expressed his fear and sense of being “out of control” when the brakes malfunctioned while driving with his family on New Year’s Eve 2023.
This follows another report earlier in the week where a different I-Pace driver claimed to lose control on a motorway due to brake failure, ultimately requiring police assistance. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is actively investigating both cases and has emphasized its commitment to prioritizing the safety of clients and vehicles.
In response to the incidents, JLR stated, “A full review is underway to determine the cause of this incident, which is still yet to be established. The safety of our clients and vehicles is JLR’s highest priority.” The company is urgently treating these claims, acknowledging the situation’s seriousness.
Mr. Phillips recounted his alarming experience, revealing that as he approached traffic lights at around 30mph, he found himself unable to brake, with the hydraulic system giving the sensation of pushing his foot up. Despite the frightening situation, the lights changed, allowing him to continue slowly to his home. He subsequently returned the vehicle, which had been owned for over three years, and has called for a comprehensive recall of the I-Pace model by Jaguar as a precautionary safety measure.
Jaguar Land Rover responded to Mr. Phillips’ claims, stating, “We are taking these recent claims by Mr. Phillips very seriously and are looking into his complaint. In addition, we are concerned to hear that Mr. Phillips may not have received the high levels of care to which we hold ourselves accountable.”
The I-Pace, an electric vehicle that employs regenerative braking to capture energy during braking, has been sold in the UK since 2018 at nearly £70,000. Notably, some Jaguar I-Pace vehicles were recalled in North America in 2019 due to a fault with the braking system. Despite these incidents, Jaguar Land Rover planned to end production of the I-Pace, its inaugural electric car, next year.
