CVS and Walgreens to Offer Abortion Pill Sales Starting This Month
On March 1, CVS and Walgreens, the two largest pharmacy chains in the United States, announced plans to begin selling the abortion pill mifepristone in stores across several states later this month. This move has garnered praise from President Joe Biden, who has made access to abortion a significant focus of his election campaign.
The announcement coincides with a legal challenge to the abortion pill in Texas, brought forth by anti-abortion groups and doctors. The U.S. Supreme Court was set to hear this case in March. Notably, the Supreme Court had overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade precedent in 2022, marking a significant shift in its stance on the constitutional right to abortion.
President Biden hailed the decision by CVS and Walgreens as a milestone and encouraged other interested pharmacies to seek certification to dispense the abortion pill. Abortion rights have become a focal point in the Biden campaign leading up to the November 5 election, where he is likely to face former President Donald Trump. The Biden campaign asserts that abortion access is a personal freedom denied to women by Trump and his fellow Republicans. In contrast, Republicans have advocated for restrictive abortion laws in nearly two dozen states since the Supreme Court’s reversal of abortion rights. They argue that stricter limits are necessary, contending that abortion terminates the life of a human being.
