In a groundbreaking development, scientists achieved a remarkable feat: engaging in what could be termed a “conversation” with a whale, marking a monumental stride in unraveling the enigma of interspecies communication. This extraordinary event unfolded off the southeast coast of Alaska in 2021 as a team of six researchers orchestrated an unprecedented interaction with a humpback whale named Twain. Using an underwater speaker to play a recording of a humpback greeting call, the researchers were met with an unexpected response from Twain, who seemed to engage in a dialogue with them.

While she marveled at the majestic presence of the whales above the water’s surface, below deck, Brenda McCowan conducted experiments with underwater speakers, broadcasting various whale sounds to elicit responses.
