Definition of Form 1099-MISC: Miscellaneous Income
The IRS Form 1099-MISC records several sorts of remuneration, including rentals, prizes, awards, healthcare payments, and attorney fees.
Form 1099-MISC was formerly used to record compensation for independent contractors, freelancers, sole proprietors, and self-employed persons before 2020. Since 2020, this non-employee remuneration has been disclosed on Form 1099-NEC: Non-Employee Compensation. These papers record company payments, not personal ones.

Who submits 1099-MISC?
Someone who pays at least $10 in royalties or broker payments instead of dividends or tax-exempt interest to another person sends Form 1099-MISC: Miscellaneous Income. It is also emailed to everyone you spent at least $600 on in the following categories during the year:
- Rents (real estate agents and property managers report rent to property owners, or you register office space rent)

In 2020, the IRS replaced Box 7 of Form 1099-MISC with Form 1099-NEC for non-employee pay.

Form black components can be completed, downloaded, and printed:
