Ascena Retail Group announced that it will be shutting down 53 stores of its Dressbarn outlets in August. Dressbarn will most likely have to be permanently shut down and file for bankruptcy.
Ascena plans to shut down all 650 Dressbarn stores by the end of the year, so it can focus on its more successful brands, such as Ann Taylor and Loft.
Steven Taylor, Dressbarn CFO, said: “We have received overwhelming landlord support for our plan, which will allow us to implement our wind down in a manner that provides the best recovery for our landlords. Further, we are current, and expect to remain so, with our vendors and suppliers.”
Dressbarn has been around for more than five decades, but in recent years it has struggled with competition like H&M, Zara, T.J. Maxx, Ross Stores, Target, as well as the advent of Amazon’s online apparel store.
