WASHINGTON, Jan 28 — The FBI is carrying out a search at a Fulton County election office outside Atlanta as part of an investigation into possible interference in Georgia during the 2020 U.S. presidential election, according to the agency and a law enforcement official familiar with the matter.
In a statement, the FBI said agents were executing a search warrant at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center in Union City, a facility opened by state officials in 2023.
Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in the 2020 election, including a narrow win in Georgia. Trump returned to the White House last year after winning the 2024 presidential race.
Officials with Fulton County’s election office directed inquiries to the county’s external affairs department, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The U.S. Justice Department also declined to comment.
Fulton County, home to Atlanta, Georgia’s largest city, voted overwhelmingly for Biden in 2020. Trump later sought unsuccessfully to overturn the state’s election result, pressuring senior Georgia officials to “find” enough votes to declare him the winner.
Earlier this month, Trump asked a state court to award him $6.2 million in legal fees he said he incurred while defending himself against criminal election interference charges brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. That case collapsed last year after disclosures that Willis had a romantic relationship with a lawyer she hired for the prosecution, leading to its dismissal. The New York Times previously reported that the U.S. Justice Department had issued subpoenas seeking records related to Willis.
Since Trump’s return to office, the Justice Department has filed lawsuits against several states demanding access to large volumes of voter data. State officials have pushed back, arguing the requests infringe on their constitutional authority to oversee elections. Several judges have dismissed the lawsuits, most recently this week in Oregon.
