GM’s Big Move: New Detroit Headquarters Planned for 2025
General Motors (GM) is making a significant move in 2025 by relocating its headquarters deeper into downtown Detroit. This move marks a departure from its riverfront location at the Renaissance Center, where it has been based for over 20 years. The new headquarters, situated a few blocks away in the sleek Hudson’s high-rise building, will provide collaborative spaces for employees, event hosting areas, and vehicle display spaces.
CEO Mary Barra emphasized the importance of Detroit as GM’s home, highlighting the company’s commitment to the city. This move positions GM as the only member of the Detroit Three automakers to have its headquarters in downtown Detroit, with Ford Motor and Stellantis headquartered nearby in Dearborn and Auburn Hills, respectively.
The Renaissance Center, with its iconic GM logo atop one of its towers, has become a notable feature of Detroit’s skyline since GM acquired the property in 1996. The move to this location contributes to a downtown renaissance in Detroit.
GM’s relocation to the Hudson’s building is part of a partnership with real estate firm Bedrock, led by Dan Gilbert, and involves an initial 15-year lease for office floors and showcase space at street level. Financial details of the lease were not disclosed.
While GM has adapted to remote work during the pandemic, Barra has indicated a commitment to returning to the office three days per week. Additionally, GM maintains a technical center in Warren, Michigan, which serves as the primary workplace for many of its employees.
This relocation represents GM’s investment in Detroit’s urban revitalization and underscores its long-term commitment to the city as it continues to evolve and grow.
