Intuitive Machines’ Lunar Landing Hits a Snag: What Happened to the Athena Spacecraft?

One of the most exciting tools onboard is Grace, a hopping drone vehicle intended to explore a permanently shadowed crater for the first time. These craters are believed to contain water ice, which could be a game-changer for sustaining human life on the Moon.
The Athena landing comes just days after Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander successfully touched down on the Moon in an upright, stable configuration on March 2, 2025. This contrast highlights the challenges Intuitive Machines continues to face in perfecting its landing technology. The Athena spacecraft was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on February 26, 2025, showcasing the collaborative efforts of private companies in advancing space exploration.
