On Monday, Israel’s energy minister opposed a U.S.-mediated Saudi civilian nuclear program.
In March, the New York Times claimed that Riyadh’s normalization arrangement with Israel required such a program. However, Saudi and U.S. officials have not confirmed.
Israel has long warned that potentially hostile neighbors could exploit civilian nuclear energy and other initiatives developed under the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as cover for covert bomb-making, citing Iraq and Libya.
Naturally, Israel discourages such practices. Israel Katz told Ynet TV, “I don’t think Israel should agree to such things.”
Last Monday, Israel demanded consultation from Washington on any U.S.-Saudi accord compromising its security. Outside the voluntary NPT and without nuclear energy, Israel is believed to have nuclear weapons.
