James Rodriguez Signs Six-Year Deal with Real Madrid

James Rodriguez is cashing in on his memorable performance in the World Cup. He recently inked a six-year deal with Real Madrid on Tuesday, July 22. Rodriguez aims to bolster Real Madrid’s already formidable offensive line that features Globe Soccer Award winner Cristano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema. He is the third $100-million player to join Real Madrid since 2009; Ronaldo and Bale both commanded the hefty sum. Rodriguez scored six goals in the World Cup and earned the Golden Boot.

According to reports, Real Madrid has paid French team Monaco a transfer fee of $108 million for Rodriguez. Late last year, Rodriguez said to FIFA.com, “The Spanish League is a league that I’ve always watched—it’s different from the English League, which is very physical. The game in Spain is more about technique and about getting touches on the ball. That’s why I like it so much.”

The left-footed forward scored 10 goals in 38 matches across all games last year with Monaco. They finished second to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. Monaco officials addressed Rodriguez’s departure as follows:

“The club would like to take the opportunity to thank James for the role he played in getting the club back to the Champions League and wishes him the very best for the future. The club had no intention to sell the player, however the time came when the solution of a transfer was considered to be the most beneficial solution for all parties.”

From 2007 to 2011, Rodriguez has made 16 appearances for the Colombia U-17 and U-20 national teams. Adidas and Nestle have recently hired Rodriguez to appear in TV commercials for them.
