Macy’s, Sears, Kohl’s and JCPenney Sued for False Prices

Who doesn’t love a good sale? In fact, there’s something satisfying about purchasing something at a lower price. However, a Los Angeles attorney is suing four major retailers for wrongly advertising sale prices. According to attorney Mike Feuer, retail customers need to know “the truth about the prices they’re paying.”

Kohl’s, Macy’s, JCPenney and Sears are under fire for allegations of “false price advertising.” The lawsuit against the four retail giants claims that the companies falsely represented “thousands of products” as a marketing ploy.

The lawsuit claim accuses Macy’s of offering a cross pendant necklace online in May for $30 with the original price being $120, that’s 75% off. According to the claim, however, the necklace was never priced above the $30 in the following months it was advertised.

The same can be said for Sears. The company falsely advertised a washer online with the price of $999.99, original price $1,179.99. Roughly around six months after the sale price was advertised, the washer never rose in price.

In California, laws forbid retailers from advertising the price of an item that hasn’t been displayed for less than three months. Feuer is pursuing injunctions against the four companies along with fines of up to $2,500 each time the companies make a violation. Neither of the four companies have made comments on the accusations.
