Mercedes drivers will soon use ChatGPT voice control. ChatGPT is becoming mobile. Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) announced Thursday that ChatGPT might power some of its luxury automobiles in the U.S. starting June 16.

After drivers opt-in via a Mercedes app or voice command, ChatGPT will download over the air to around 900,000 vehicles having “MBUX” systems. Mercedes will observe drivers’ technology use for three months.
Mercedes said ChatGPT would make its auto system’s responses sound more natural and allow drivers to ask about destinations or dinner.

Drivers and passengers may previously speak about demands like seat warmers.

Microsoft (MSFT.O) is profiting from the ChatGPT deal by offering a cloud-based chatbot.

Microsoft invested in ChatGPT’s inventor, OpenAI, to counter Amazon.com (AMZN.O)’s efforts to deploy Alexa in more automobiles.

In a news release, the German automaker stated drivers can talk to their automobiles and issue commands using “Hey Mercedes.”

In a second blog post, Microsoft suggested plug-ins might allow drivers to make restaurant reservations, book movie tickets, and perform other operations while driving.

The company claimed the pilot program would guide Mercedes’ plans to bring artificial intelligence to other countries and languages. It said that Mercedes cloud stores anonymize and analyze voice data.

As part of its work with Microsoft, rival General Motors (GM.N) said it was researching ChatGPT usage in automobiles in March.
