Orange is the New Black Season 2

After an excruciatingly long wait, “Orange is the New Black” season 2 will be released this Fri., Jun. 6 on Netflix. Since its debut in Jun. 2013 the dark-prison-comedy series (now there’s a genre) has had tremendous success. Even when it was merely one season long the show had already taken the title of Netflix’s most watched original series in Oct. Additionally, it has been renewed for a third season.

“Orange is the New Black” is based on a book by Piper Kerman, in which she recounts her own experiences in prison. The show is produced by Jenji Kohan, producer of “Weeds”, who struggled to find a place for the series concept. Nevertheless, Koha recalled to The New York Times that upon presenting the show to Netflix they, “pretty much bought it in the room”.

The dark comedy follows New Yorker, Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling,as she is sent to women’s prison in Connecticut. She is there on old drug charges from when she had smuggled money for her ex-girlfriend Alex Vause, played by Laura Prepon. Her sentence is 15 months long for her actions which took place 10 years prior.

As the delightfully waspy Piper Chapman enters the facility, she is astounded to find that her ex-girlfriend Alex is serving time at the same place. Piper deals with the appalling circumstances and struggles of being an inmate. On top of that, she tries to balance her engagement to a male, Jewish writer outside of the facility. Piper comes across a colorful group of women. Characters such as Red, the Russian cook, and Crazy Eyes, who relentlessly pursues Piper to be her “wife”, are what make this show so humorous and engaging.

Season 2 will certainly provide nudity, as Kohan stated in Apr., “I love graphic sex, the more sex the better.” It seems that some changes are in store for Larry, Piper’s (ex?) fiance. Jason Biggs told EW, “if you’re going to keep Larry involved, there needs to be some sort of change, and there are some in store.” Unfortunately, this season will have much less of Alex as Prepon revealed that she would only be in four episodes of season 2. Yet she says that regular appearances in season 3 are definitely a possibility.

In the season 2 opener Piper has been in solitary confinement as a result of her violent confrontation with Doggett. She is then moved to an unknown location which presents a new set of wild characters. The show will continue to reveal flashbacks about the inmates pasts. Seemingly, the show will include the backgrounds of new characters.

Also, there will be more revealed about Piper’s clash with Doggett. The matter is apparently eased rapidly with a disturbing yet satisfying resolution. The second season will involve a great deal of power struggles along with greed, lust, and the flawed inner workings of bureaucracy.
