On Thursday, Tajik officials reported a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in eastern Tajikistan at 5:37 a.m. (0037 GMT). China and other neighboring nations felt it.
The hilly Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous area was ravaged by devastating avalanches earlier this month before the earthquake. In addition, the thinly inhabited lake, Sarez, may flood multiple nations if disturbed.
Tajik officials reported no earthquake-related lake damage.
The epicenter was 82 km (50.95 miles) from the nearest border with China, and Chinese state broadcaster CCTV stated that Kashgar and Artux in western Xinjiang felt the earthquake’s magnitude of 7.2.
A resident in Rushon, Gorno-Badakhshan, reported several people went outside after being awakened by the earthquake and at least two aftershocks.
Tajikistan and China reported no casualties. Xinhua reported enduring power and connectivity in Kashgar.
State media said the Southern Xinjiang railway stopped passenger trains from Aksu to Kashgar.
CCTV reported local officials are examining bridges, tunnels, and signal systems.
