On Wednesday, President Putin signed a decree that might pave the way for Russia to formally “denounce” the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.

The pact sought to control the number of forces deployed by the Warsaw Pact and NATO countries. The order formally designated Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov to represent Putin during legislative processes on rejecting the deal.

It was declared in 2015 that Russia would no longer be adhering to the pact in any capacity.
